THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

Challenging Assumptions. Examining Evidence. Shaping the Future of Healthcare.

Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, often faster than our ability to understand its consequences for patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems. Discussion is frequently dominated by technological innovation, commercial interests, and promises of transformation. HUMAI believes a different conversation is needed: one grounded in scientific evidence, informed by clinical experience, and guided by patient values.

Meaningful thought leadership begins with asking better questions—not simply providing more answers. HUMAI brings together diverse perspectives to examine the promises, limitations, and uncertainties of AI in healthcare.

Evidence Before Enthusiasm

Innovation should be evaluated with the scientific rigour expected of other healthcare interventions. Claims of accuracy, efficiency, and benefit must withstand critical appraisal.

Collaboration Over Silos

No single profession or industry can determine healthcare’s future. Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics, allied health professionals, researchers, patients, and policymakers each contribute essential perspectives.

Patients at the Centre

AI should serve patients and communities. Implementation decisions must account for preferences,

autonomy, trust, accessibility, equity, and wider societal consequences.

The Muskoka Conversation

Inspired by the tradition of convening diverse thinkers to examine consequential scientific and societal challenges, HUMAI welcomes thoughtful disagreement and acknowledges uncertainty. Its goal is not necessarily consensus, but deeper understanding of what is known, unknown, and still needs to be studied. This inspiration does not imply any formal association with the Pugwash organization.

From Conversation to Action

The inaugural HUMAI conference in Muskoka in 2027 may inform a Muskoka Declaration on AI in Healthcare, identifying areas of agreement, important uncertainties, and priorities for research, clinical practice, and policy. The statement should reflect what emerges from discussion rather than predetermined conclusions.

The future of AI in healthcare should be shaped not only by what technology makes possible, but by what evidence supports and what patients value.
