NEJM AI: Peer-reviewed research and expert commentary on clinical AI performance, validation, implementation, and safety

Good clinical decisions require good evidence. NEJM AI, part of the New England Journal of Medicine family of publications, publishes peer-reviewed research and expert commentary on the development, evaluation, and implementation of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Topics include algorithm performance, clinical validation, patient safety, ethics, and the challenges of integrating AI into clinical practice.
For those interested in the science behind medical AI, this is a valuable resource. However, peer review does not automatically mean that research findings are valid or clinically important. Showing that an AI model can accurately predict an outcome differs from showing that using it improves patient care. External validation, appropriate study design, and patient-important outcomes remain essential. NEJM AI provides an
opportunity to examine the emerging science and consider how the findings might inform clinical decisions. This is the kind of evidence-based discussion HUMAI hopes to encourage.
Continuing the Conversation
Beyond HUMAI is intended to be an evolving collection of resources that complement our faculty's research, educational initiatives, and discussions about evidence-based medicine.
By sharing thoughtful perspectives from across the field, we hope to encourage informed debate, support critical appraisal, and contribute to a more responsible approach to AI in healthcare.
Our goal is not simply to follow the conversation about AI in medicine, but to help advance it.
