The EBM Framework
Where evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values meet artificial intelligence.
HUMAI is a Canadian initiative bringing together healthcare professionals, researchers, patients, policymakers, and thought leaders to critically examine the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
Grounded in evidence-based medicine, HUMAI integrates three essential perspectives: scientific evidence (what research tells us about benefits, risks, and limitations); clinical expertise (how findings translate to real-world care); and patient values (how preferences, priorities, and circumstances should guide use).
Through meaningful conversations and interdisciplinary collaboration, HUMAI creates space to challenge assumptions, acknowledge uncertainty, and explore whether AI can contribute to better healthcare. Our goal is not AI adoption for its own sake, but decisions informed by evidence, clinical judgment, and the people healthcare serves.

Our Co-Chairs.
HumAI’s co-chairs bring a shared commitment to evidence-based medicine, thoughtful innovation, and improving patient care. With expertise spanning emergency medicine, research, education, and artificial intelligence, Dr. Ken Milne and Dr. Kirsty Challen champion a rigorous, patient-centred approach to understanding AI’s potential and its impact on healthcare.
Dr. Ken Milne, MD, MSc, MBA
Co-Founder, HUMAI | Creator, Skeptics’ Guide to Emergency Medicine

Dr. Ken Milne is an internationally known Canadian emergency physician, educator, and Associate Professor at Western University. For more than three decades, he has advocated for evidence-based medicine, critical appraisal, and translating research into better patient care.
In 2012, he created the Skeptics’ Guide to Emergency Medicine (www.TheSGEM.com), a global medical education platform dedicated to reducing the time between medical research publication and bedside application.
More recently, Dr. Milne has turned his attention to artificial intelligence in healthcare, exploring its potential benefits, limitations, and unintended consequences. He has written several peer-reviewed articles and delivered invited presentations on AI in Australia and at Stanford University. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) at the University of Oxford, focusing on AI and evidence-based healthcare.
His approach remains grounded in a simple principle: new technology should be evaluated with the same scientific rigour as any other healthcare intervention, guided by clinical expertise and patient values.
Dr. Kirsty Challen, MBChB, PhD, FRCEM
Co-Founder, HUMAI

Dr. Kirsty Challen is a British emergency physician, researcher and educator. Her academic scope includes triage, risk prediction and prognostic tools, trauma care and health services research.
She joined the faculty of the Skeptics’ Guide to Emergency Medicine (www.TheSGEM.com) in 2016, contributing the #PaperinaPic visual summaries of published evidence. She also serves as an Associate Editor for the Emergency Medicine Journal.
She is the inaugural chair of the Gender Equity Committee of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and has also chaired the Informatics Committee. She works with RCEM Global to support internationally funded programs for the development of Emergency Medicine in Ethiopia and Syria, where she continues to advocate for equity in healthcare and the importance of the patient voice.
She greatly values her inner small child and encourages everyone involved in healthcare to keep asking "but WHY?".
